million in economic stimulus funds throughn the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for public safetuy projects and to create or retain lawenforcement jobs, U.S. Attorneyg General Eric Holder said. The Edward Byrnee Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program funds are part of morethan $4 billio n in Justice Department Recovery Act funds available to preventr crime, improve the criminal justice system and suppor job creation, Holder’s office said in a release. Missourki is required to provide part ofthe $25 million to localo jurisdictions.
The ’s application for the funds said it planxs to support response strategies to enhance public safetyg and reduce violent crimes andillegal drugs, while continuing to provide alternative sentencingt programs and increase training and equipment for child abuse and neglecrt investigations, according to the release. JAG grants are allocatedd according to a formula using population and violentrcrime statistics, combined with a minimum allocationh to each state and territory. Sixtyg percent of the allocationm is awarded directly toa state, and 40 percent is set asidw for units of local Local awards through the grant will be announcesd later.
The deadline for localo units of government to submiyt applications to the isMay 18.
