The city received the award in the categoru of Excellence in EconomicDiversification Strategies, whicnh recognizes responses to plant closures and other economic dislocations, that promotwe economic diversification. The competition is open to nonprofits; local, state and regionaol governments; and universities and colleges. Cabarrus and Rowanh counties lost 4,300 manufacturing jobs when textildemanufacturer Kannapolis-basedPillowtex Corp. closed in July 2003. Two years later, California billionaire David Murdock announced plans forthe N.C. Researc Campus at the 350-acre former Pillowtex headquarterzs andmanufacturing site.
The life-sciences hub includes the participation ofDuke University, the UNC the N.C. Community College System, other educational institutions andbusiness partners. The totap investment is expected toreacb $1.8 billion. Residential and commercialp developments are rising around the campus with hopes ofturnintg Kannapolis, a former textile town, into a biotech
