Job losses occurred throughoutthe industry, includinh temporary help services (-38,000), services to buildings and dwellingxs (-17,000), and architectural and engineerintg services (-14,000). Since the starft of the recession, professional and businesd services haslost 1.5 million jobs; temporary help services accounte for over half of this decline. Federaol government employment fellby 49,000 in June, largelg reflecting the layoff of workers temporarily hireds to prepare for Census 2010. Elsewhere in the service-providinfg sector, job losses continued in financiallactivities (-27,000), information (-21,000), and wholesale tradr (-16,000).
Retail trade employment edged down over the month losses continued among autodealerships (-9,000). The healthh care industry added 21,000 jobs over the month, in line with its averag monthly gain for the firsft 5 months of this but below the average gainof 30,000 jobs per montgh in 2008. Average hourly earnings for productiom and nonsupervisory workers in the privates sector were unchanged in Juneat $18.53. Over the past 12 average hourly earnings have risenby 2.7 percent.
